Ebeniste
French term for cabinetmaker.

Ebony
(Ceylon, India, Africa) Has gray sapwood, deep black heartwood. Hard and fine grained; used for veneers and inlays.

Egg
A classic carving motif, suggesting alternating eggs and darts, used mostly in cornices.

Eggshell
Featuring a slightly higher sheen than a matte finish, an eggshell finish provides a delicate balance between washability and subtle gloss. Eggshell is versatile enough for most rooms.

Eight
The method of tying springs of upholstered furniture to the base with twine running from front to back, side to side, and diagonally, hence the term 8-way; used in better upholstery.

Elasticity
The ability of paint or caulk to expand and contract with the substrate without cracking.

Embroidery
A decoration in needlework executed by hand on fabric already woven.

Enamel
A broad classification of paints that have a hard finish. They may be flat, glossy or semi-glossy.

Escritoire
A writing desk containing, with other drawer compartments and pigeon holes, one or more secret ones. The English word “secretary” was derived from this.

Escutcheon
Name applied to a shield upon which a coat of arms or other devices are emblazoned. In furniture, fitting over a keyhole or the back plate of a handle.

Etagere
A series of shelves supported by columns, used chiefly for the display of curios.

Evolute
Recurrent wave scroll used to decorate friezes and bands.
